Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller tells the German enthusiastic magazine the flat "boxer" engine will be part of the company's efforts to meet future carbon dioxide emission limited dictated by the European Union.
The Boxster and Cayman currently are equipped with 6-cylinder, 3.4-liter engines that make 325 hp and 335 hp, respectively.
