Porsche AG is offering its own insurance for customers in Illinois and Oregon through a plan that touts a low base price and rates based on actual miles driven.
The coverage, dubbed Porsche Auto Insurance, is being offered through Porsche Financial Services and Atlanta, Ga.-based Mile Auto Inc. that caters to low-mileage drivers.
Customers will take and submit periodic photos of their odometers to confirm their mileage. Porsche says the system is simpler and more private than other such services, which rely upon tracking devices or always-on smartphone apps to calculate distance driven.
The service, which Porsche aims to expand later to other U.S. markets, is available to owners of Porsche models built since 1980 and garaged in Illinois or Oregon.
