Porsche secured its third consecutive manufacturers’ and drivers’ titles in the LMP1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) racing series with a second- and third-place finish at the Shanghai 6-hour race on Sunday.
Toyota coasted to its second straight win in Shanghai. But a late crash by a second Toyota team prevented the carmaker from earning the one-two finish it needed to stay in contention for the manufacturers’ title heading into the season finale in two weeks in Bahrain.
The Toyota crash also clinched the driver’s title for the Porsche team of Earl Bamber, Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley.
In July Porsche announced this would be its final WEC season, as the company prepares to join the Formula E electric car series in the 2019/2020 season. The carmaker rejoined WEC in 2014 with its 919 hybrid-electric race car following a 15-year hiatus.
