Porsche Develops Active Rear Diffuser

Porsche AG has filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for an active diffuser that deploys from the rear bumper.
The system is described as one or more flaps that fold down from the rear bumper to improve aerodynamics and performance during lateral acceleration. The flaps have a concave surface that blends into the vehicle’s lower body when not in use, according to the carmaker.
Porsche says the design is less cumbersome than active diffusers that are integrated into a vehicle’s underbody. Illustrations filed with the patent show the device being used on a crossover/SUV-type vehicle.
Lamborghini SpA introduced a similar system on its Huracan Performante, which uses active flaps in the front and rear. General Motors Co. also is said to be considering an active diffuser for the next-generation Chevrolet Corvette.
