A plot to steal the body of Enzo Ferrari from his grave has been thwarted, Italian police officials announced on Tuesday.

In a raid involving 300 officers, police arrested 30 gang members believed to be involved in the plot. The gang planned to demand a ransom from the Ferrari family, detectives said at a news conference.

The plan was discovered during a separate investigation into a drug trafficking ring on the island of Sardinia. The gang reportedly had made detailed plans on how to steal the coffin, hide it and contact the family.

Ferrari, who founded the carmaker that bears his name in 1939, died in 1988 at the age of 90. He is buried in an above-ground family tomb at a cemetery near Ferrari’s Maranello plant in central Italy.
