PSA Group’s DS Automobiles is launching what’s described as the first contactless payment-enabled key this month in the U.K.
Available on Connected Chic trim levels of the DS 3 hatchback, the system allows motorists to make purchases of as much as £30 ($40) per day by holding their key fob near RFID readers—similar to smartphone payment apps. Customers also will also be able to track their spending, transfer balances, and block or cancel the contactless payment system.
Like other contactless payment devices, the DS 3 key fob will be linked to a user’s bank account and/or credit card via a bPay payment chip. Nearly 500,000 retail locations in the U.K. have compatible readers.
The DS 3 application coincides with the 10th anniversary of Barclays Bank plc introducing contactless payments in the U.K. More than £60 billion ($78 billion) has been spent using such cards and devices during this time, according to the bank.
