St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Jabil Inc. and Israel’s eyeSight Technologies Ltd. have developed a sensor that integrates driver monitoring and gesture control technologies.

The system pairs Jabil’s computational camera modules and optics capabilities with eyeSight’s computer vision and deep learning software.

The combination operates with sub-pixel accuracy that enables high-resolution driver monitoring, according to the partners. They note that enhanced camera accuracy and improved software will allow the system to be smaller and lighter.

The scalable system uses “time-of-flight” wave measurement and infrared capabilities to allow for driver identification (facial recognition, gender and age), attentiveness and distraction via a person’s head position, posture and eyelid, iris and gaze tracking. The touch-free gesture control can be used to manage the car’s infotainment, navigation and HVAC systems.
