General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles are resuming operations today at 19 plants in Michigan after a fire disrupted a utility’s natural gas compressor station outside Detroit.
The companies voluntarily idled the manufacturing facilities on Wednesday in response to an emergency plea from Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Dozens of other companies did the same in an effort to help conserve gas for use by the state’s residents—who also were asked to turn down their thermostats—as overnight temperatures fell to as low as -15°F.
