Nissan Motor Corp. has begun replacing defective engine timing chains in 104,400 Juke MPVs sold in the U.S. and Canada.
The company reports the chain links may loosen prematurely, causing noise and raising the potential for catastrophic engine damage if the chain breaks. Nissan dealers are replacing the chain, guides and crank sprocket.
Owners have been complaining about the problem in online forums for months. Many say Nissan has been replacing the faulty components and in at least some cases reimbursing owners whose engines were destroyed when the chain slipped or broke.
All affected Jukes were built in Nissan's assembly plant in Oppama, Japan.
