Nissan Motor Co. is preparing a global recall of about 1.1 million cars, vans and crossovers with passenger airbags that may not inflate when they should. About 90% of affected vehicles are in the U.S.

The company recalled most of the vehicles a year ago in an attempt to fix the same problem. The new campaign includes:

  • 2013-2014 model Altima midsizesedans, Leaf electric cars, Sentra small sedans and Pathfinder SUVs
  • 2013 model Infiniti JX35 wagons and NV200 vans
  • 2014 model Infiniti Q50 sedans and QX60 crossovers
Nissan reports to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that a faulty airbag sensor system may deactivate the airbags after failing to detect the presence of an adult in the passenger seat. The system is intended to suppress airbag operation if the seat is vacant or occupied by a child.

Last year Nissan replaced seat sensors, but consumer complaints continued. This time dealers will reprogram the system's software. The recall is expected to begin in mid-April.
