The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is halting virtually all safety-related activities, including recalls, because of the U.S. federal government shutdown.
The agency says it has suspended work on safety investigations, new safety regulations, crash testing, safety research and compliance validation.
NHTSA also has stopped posting new vehicle recalls on its Web site and won't evaluate any new consumer complaints about possible safety defects until Congress establishes a federal budget and resumes government functions.
In the meantime, the agency says visitors to its site can continue to search for existing recalls or submit safety-related complaints.
