The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded its investigation into complaints about malfunctioning brake lights in Pontiac G6 coupes and sedans to an engineering analysis, which is often the precursor to a recall.

The probe covers an estimated 550,000 G6 sedans produced during the 2005-2008 model years.

The probe was opened in February after more than 1,000 owners complained that the brake lights on their cars turn off when the brake pedal is pressed and on when the pedal is released.

NHTSA says some owners also report malfunctioning cruise control units and difficulty shifting the transmission out of Park.
