Federal safety officials have launched an investigation into the cause of door fires in 2012 Jeep Liberty SUVs.
The probe by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration could lead to the recall of nearly 80,000 vehicles. Owners report the fire broke out in the area of the power window switch.
In addition to visible flames, consumers reported erratic function of the windows and door locks. One complaint alleges a vehicle caught fire a second time after it was repaired.
Fiat SpA's Chrysler Group LLC stopped building the Liberty last fall and is currently shipping its replacement, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, to dealers this month.
