The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a probe to determine whether General Motors Co. should broaden a recent recall of 6,800 vehicles to cover an estimated 400,000 units.
GM recalled the 2012 model Buick Verano and Chevrolet Camaro, Cruze and Sonic cars last October and January to fix a potential short circuit that could prevent the driver's frontal airbag from being triggered in a crash.
NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation says it launched the review because it is not convinced GM has fully identified the manufacturing problem that caused the defect.
