The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into complaints that the steering gear box could fail on heavy-duty Ford pickup trucks, resulting in a complete loss of steering control.

The initial probe involves 2008 model F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickups. NHTSA says it has received five complaints about the problem, which could affect an estimated 340,000 vehicles.
