The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into 58 complaints about sudden brake failures in 2009 model Nissan Murano SUVs.
The probe covers about 110,000 vehicles. NHTSA suspects a problem with an electro-mechanical device in the antilock brake system that controls hydraulic pressure to the brakes.
Many complaints say the problem occurs shortly after the ABS has been activated by braking on a slippery or bumpy surface. Several reports say that replacing the control unit appears to fix the issue.
