Mazda Motor Corp. says it will officially unveil the fourth-generation MX-5 Miata sports car on Sept. 3 during simultaneous events in Spain, Japan and the U.S.

The roadster, which will be labeled a 2016 model, is likely to go on sale about 12 months from now.

The new Miata's rear-drive platform is being co-developed by Mazda and Fiat SpA. Mazda showed the chassis in concept form during the New York auto show in April, describing it as smaller, stronger and 220 lbs lighter than the chassis that carries the current Miata.

Fiat's version of the car will replace the Italian company's Alfa Romeo Spider. The company hasn't said when its model will debut. CEO Sergio Marchionne has been coy about whether the car will carry the Alfa or Fiat brand.
