Subaru Corp. will unveil the redesigned Forester crossover SUV later this month at the New York auto show.
The fifth-generation model will ride on Subaru’s global platform, which is expected to provide more passenger room than the current Forester. The architecture debuted in 2016 with the Impreza sedan and also carries the Crosstrek crossover and upcoming 2019 Ascent midsize SUV.
A teaser image of the 2019 Forester shows an elliptical taillight that extends onto the liftgate. The design mimics the styling of the Ascent and other new Subaru models. Previous spy shots indicate the new Forester also will have a taller roofline than its predecessor and feature a sloping windshield and redesigned front-end.
Media reports suggest Subaru could add a sporty version of the Forester in the U.S., similar to the Forester tS sold in Japan. A plug-in hybrid variant also has been rumored.
The fourth-generation Forester has been in production since 2012. The vehicle is Subaru’s second-best-selling model, following the Outback SUV.
