General Motors Co. says it will take the wraps off the redesigned Chevrolet Corvette in mid-July.

Last night GM released several photos of the mid-engine Vette, albeit heavily camouflaged, driving in New York City with CEO Mary Barra in the passenger seat. Although spy photos of the all-new car have been circulating for months, this is the first time GM has officially acknowledged the eighth-generation car.

GM notes that the planned unveiling, scheduled for July 18, will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Apollo 11 space capsule. American astronauts landed on the moon two days later.

The much-anticipated C8 model will move to a mid-engine layout for the first time. GM says the latest version of the iconic sports car will set a new “standard of performance.”

Reports earlier this year suggested that the car’s introduction had been delayed due to problems with an all-new electrical architecture—with more than 100 processors—that GM is adopting for future cars. There also has been concerns about structural distortions to the car’s aluminum spaceframe, according to media reports.
