Ferrari NV plans to replace its top-end LaFerrari hypercar by 2022 with an all-new model that uses technology it can apply to future road vehicles.

Ferrari is updating its future product roadmap, which it hopes to finalize in about six months, chief technology officer Michael Leiters tells Autocar. He expects the new hypercar will be launched within three to five years.

Ferrari wants to do “something different” with the new vehicle, Leiters says. He notes that using an F1 powertrain is no longer realistic because of idling and redline performance requirements.

Launched in 2013, the limited-edition LaFerrari two-seater is powered by a 963-hp hybrid drivetrain that pairs a 6.3-liter V-12 engine and an electric motor with a Formula One-style kinetic energy recovery system. The LaFerrari also features the carmaker’s F1 carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic components, active diffusers and dynamic chassis system.
