Daimler AG's just-introduced S 63 AMG high-performance luxury sedan offers all-wheel drive for the first time.

The 2014 model's 5.5-liter V-8 two-turbocharger engine makes 585 hp (up 41 hp from the previous model), pumps out a prodigious 664 lb-ft of torque and has a European fuel economy rating of 23 mpg.

The super sedan, which delivers power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission, can dash from zero to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 kph (155 mph). The optional 4Matic all-wheel-drive powertrain reduces 0-62 kph time to 4.0 seconds.

The aluminum-bodied S 63 AMG is about 100 kg (220 lb) lighter than the previous model, thanks primarily to lighter-alloy wheels, composite brakes, a lithium-ion starter battery and a spare tire recess made of carbon fiber, according to the company.

Daimler says the combination of stronger engine and lighter bodywork results in a power-to-weight ratio just under 3.5 kg/hp.

The S 63 AMG will be offered in short- and long-wheelbase variants. The all-wheel-drive system is available only with the latter chassis.
