Fire extinguishers that could become clogged and fail to work have prompted 17 U.S. makers of recreational vehicles to recall 1.95 million vehicles.

The campaigns vary by manufacturers but span model years 2003-2018. The callbacks target plastic-handle and push-button fire extinguishers produced by Kidde Corp., a unit of United Technologies Corp.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the faulty devices may require excessive force to activate or not function at all. In some cases, the nozzle may detach with enough force to cause injury or prevent the extinguisher from working.

The biggest vehicle recall is being conduced by Keystone RV (1.2 million units). Other large campaigns involve Forest River (358,600 units), KZRV (134,000) and Thor Motor Coach (110,400).

The callback is part of a broader recall by Kidde that involves 134 versions of the fire extinguishers produced in 1973-2017 and sold in the U.S. and Canada for general use.
