Bob Mallon, a Ford dealer who headed the National Automobile Dealers Assn. in 1978, died last Thursday at age 83 at his home in Tacoma, Wash.

Mallon also served as NADA’s Washington state director for 30 years. But he is perhaps best known for launching the NADA Foundation in 1975.

The nonprofit foundation helps dealership employees after natural disasters, awards scholarships to students and supports Canine Companions for Independence, an organization that provides trained assistance dogs for children. The foundation has distributed more than $13 million to date.
