Tesla Inc. is targeting a sub-two-second 0-60 mph acceleration time for the next-generation of its top-end Roadster electric vehicle, which would make it the fastest car in the world.
Describing prospects for such a vehicle as “interesting,” CEO Elon Musk says the new Roadster will be able to achieve the speed record with production tires from the first day it's available to consumers. He made the comments on his personal twitter account. No timeframe for the vehicle was given other than to say it was “several years away.”
Tesla’s latest over-the-air software update gave the Model S P100D a 2.4-second 0-60 mph time. The Porsche 918 Spyder and Bugatti Chiron currently hold the speed record with times of 2.3 seconds.
