Mitsubishi Motors Corp. aims by the end of next year to begin making engines in China for its locally assembled SUVs.
The powerplants will be produced at a 10 billion-yen ($92 million) factory that has been under construction since the end of March in Changsha. The facility will be operated by GAC Mitsubishi Motors, MMC’s 5-year-old joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group.
MMC says the factory will have capacity to make about 150,000 engines per year. The GAC-Mitsubishi venture currently imports powerplants from Japan. The company makes ASX small SUVs and larger Pajero Sport and Outlander SUVs.
