Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is preparing a second-round recall of explosion-prone Takata Corp. airbag inflators.
The campaign targets the passenger-side front airbag inflators in 2004-2006 model Lancer sedans and Lancer Evolution sport sedans.
MMC recalled the same cars two years ago and replaced the inflators with identical units. Like the original devices, those replacement inflators could deteriorate after prolonged exposure to heat and humidity, then misfire in a crash. At least 16 fatalities have been blamed on the defect.
MMV replaced the flawed inflators with identical units as a stopgap, reasoning they wouldn’t deteriorate before a permanent fix was ready. Now the company has a supply of inflators that use a more stable type of propellant. Dealers will begin installing the new devices on Oct. 22.
