Mitsubishi Motors Corp. has agreed to recall an unspecified number of certain 2004-2005 Lancer sedans so dealers can replace defective airbag inflators supplied by Takata Corp.
MMC is the 10th carmaker to announce new or extended campaigns to repair Takata airbag systems with inflators that could explode and spray metal shrapnel into the passenger compartment.
The carmaker has agreed to the recall as requested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, even though it tells the agency it isn't aware of any problems with its cars.
More than 12 million vehicles have been recalled in the past five years to replace flawed Takata airbags and/or inflators. NHTSA's request focuses on high-humidity markets where the problem appears to be most evident. The MMC campaign will entail only cars sold in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
