BMW AG's Mini unit has unveiled a longer, wider, taller and better-equipped hardtop model for 2015. The third-generation car will be publicly introduced at the Los Angeles auto show this week and go on sale in the U.S. in March.

At 151 inches long, 68 inches wide and 56 inches tall, the third-generation Mini is 4.5 inches longer, 1.7 inches wider and 0.3 inches taller than the current model. The wheelbase extends to 98.2 inches compared with 97.1 inches for the current version.

Mini says the redesigned model also gains three cu. ft. of cargo space.

BMW-sourced turbocharged powertrains include a 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder engine that produces 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque in the base model. An optional 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder unit makes 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque in the Cooper S. Both engines can be mated to 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

Technology upgrades include head-up display, camera-based active cruise control, collision and pedestrian warning systems, a rearview camera and LED headlights. Pricing will be announced later.
