Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit has released a teaser image of the second-generation CLA.
The darkened image indicates the 2020 model will maintain the current CLA’s coupe-like profile. But earlier spy shots suggest the all-new car will feature a sportier design resembles a scaled-down version of the new CLS sedan.
The second-generation CLA will ride on a revised version of the current car's front-wheel-drive MFA2 platform, which also carries the new A-Class small car. Media reports say the new model will be slightly longer than the current CLA, which measures more than 182 inches from bumper to bumper.
Mercedes is fine-tuning the car’s design to bolster aerodynamics. This should enable the new model to come close to matching the current car’s 0.22 coefficient of drag, despite having a larger front end, according to Autocar.
The interior will feature an updated version of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system that debuted this year in the A-Class. Among the list of enhancements are a new navigation system with augmented reality, improved voice recognition system that recognizes indirect commands and a gesture-based system to control certain vehicle features.
Mercedes is expected to publicly unveil the car next month at the CES electronics show in Las Vegas. Sales are scheduled to start next summer. High-performance AMG variants also are said to be in the works.
