Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz Cars unit tells Automotive News it will bring its redesigned A-Class subcompact sedan to the U.S. market next autumn.

Until now, the A-Class was available only as a five-door hatch, a body style considered unappealing for the American luxury car market. Speculation is that the new sedan variant will retail in the U.S. for just under $30,000.

Mercedes unveiled the new A-Class sedan in concept form (pictured) at the Shanghai auto show last April. Declaring “the time of creases is over,” Daimler says the car’s smooth exterior lines reflect a “sensual treatment” of surfaces.

The sedan will ride on the carmaker’s MFA2 platform, a front-drive architecture that also carries the Mercedes CLA coupelike subcompact sedan ($32,700) and GLA subcompact crossover vehicle (33,400).
