The 2018 model Mercedes-Benz AMG E63 and E63 S will be the most powerful E-Class models Daimler AG has ever produced, according to the company.

The vehicles are fitted with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 that debuted in the AMG C63 sedan and AMG GT sports car, and a 9-speed dual-clutch transmission. The combination replaces the current E63’s 5.5-liter V-8 and 7-speed automatic gearbox.

In the E63 S, the 4.0-liter mill is tuned to make 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. The engine propels the sedan from zero to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 186 mph.

The base 2018 E63 is rated at 563 hp and 553 lb-ft. It zips to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and is electronically limited to 155 mph. The current E63’s 5.5-liter V-8 tops out at 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.

The 4.0-liter engine features a twin-scroll turbo design to boost performance and reduce acceleration lag. Cylinder deactivation helps improve fuel economy.

The car's standard all-wheel-drive system can vary torque to as much as 100% to either axle as needed. And a new “drift” mode setting allows users to slide sideways through performance stunts when the stability control system is turned off.

Other goodies include a re-engineered sport suspension and more aggressive styling. The latter is highlighted by a new front fascia, model-specific grille, and flared wheel wells to accommodate the car’s wider track width.

Mercedes will publicly introduce the new E63 next month at the Los Angeles auto show.
