Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV will get a complete overhaul for the 2019-model year as the iconic off-roader gets its first redesign since the first-generation model debuted in 1979.
The only part being carried over from the current G-Class will be a small plastic lip on the C-pillar. The new model will maintain its predecessor’s boxy shape but gain cleaner lines and edges, Mercedes design boss Gordon Wagner tells Automotive News.
Previous spy shots of the new G-Class being road tested indicate the vehicle will be considerably wider than the outgoing model. Media reports note the change would ease the current model’s cramped interior and allow for a beefier suspension to help improve off-road performance.
