Mercedes Files Patent for 8-Speed Transmission
Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit earlier this month filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for an 8-speed automatic transmission under the 8 G-Tronic name.

Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit earlier this month filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for an 8-speed automatic transmission under the 8 G-Tronic name.
The carmaker already offers 7- and 9-speed G-Tronic transmissions. The latter is set to replace the 7-speed automatic in several 2018 models. An 8-speed gearbox could be used in sportier or small car applications, AutoGuide speculates.
