The next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS sedan will move to the carmaker’s modular rear architecture (MRA) that carries the redesigned E-Class introduced earlier this year.

Due in Europe in late 2017 and the U.S. in mid-2018, the new CLS will be larger and lighter than the current model. The vehicle will feature coupe-like styling. Other design changes are expected to be relatively modest and similar to those in the revamped E-Class.

The third-generation CLS could be renamed the CLE, according to some media reports. If this happens, they say, the CLS badge will be used for an AMG sports sedan that would compete against the Porsche Panamera. Mercedes declined to comment.
