Dietmar Exler, who has served as president and CEO of Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz USA unit since 2016, is expected to announce tomorrow he is leaving the company, a source tells Automotive News.

Exler, 51, was vice president of sales for the U.S. business before replacing Steve Cannon as the unit’s CEO. Exler’s next move is expected to be outside the auto industry, AN’s source says.

The Mercedes brand has been the best-selling luxury brand in the American market in 2016-2018. But sales are down 11% this year, and Mercedes has dropped behind rival BMW AG.
