Daimler AG has opened its new Mercedes-Benz Research & Development India Ltd. facility in Bangalore, the company's largest R&D center outside Germany.

The new site accommodates all 1,200 Mercedes-Benz researchers in India. The company says it will hire another 800 engineers there by the end of 2015.

The facility specializes in safety modeling, passenger-car powertrains, developing new models for emerging markets and working with local suppliers.

Mercedes-Benz Cars also says it will invest $175 million in India to add four new models and double annual capacity at its Chakan plant in Pune to 20,000 units.
