Mazda Motor Corp. will add a subcompact crossover to its Japan lineup later this year, according to The Nikkei, which cites no sources.
The Tokyo-based newspaper says the new model will share its platform with the redesigned Mazda2 small sedan, called the Demio in Japan, due this summer.
The new model reportedly will debut in Japan with a price starting at 1.5 million yen ($14,700). Mazda will introduce the vehicle in Europe and emerging markets later. The Nikkei doesn't say if the vehicle's marketing plans include the U.S.
The newspaper notes that Japanese demand for SUV/crossover vehicles rose 7% in 2013 compared with zero growth for the market overall.
