Mazda Motor Corp. Chairman Takashi Yamanouchi, 69, will retire on June 24 after a 47-year career with the Japanese carmaker. He has been chairman since 2010.

He is credited with restructuring and stabilizing the company, expanding its overseas production base, pursuing alliance partners and focusing resources to develop Mazda's Skyactiv suite of fuel-saving technologies.

Yamanouchi, who turned over the roles of president and CEO to Masamichi Kogai a year ago, will be succeeded as chairman by Seita Kanai, who currently serves as Mazda's vice chairman.
