Mazda Motor Corp. is launching a new Takata airbag inflator recall in South Africa, this time targeting Mazda2 and Mazda6 sedans and RX-8 sports cars.
The callback involves cars sold after 2002. Reuters says the campaign covers about 19,000 vehicles.
The Takata inflators are among roughly 120 million such units being replaced by 19 carmakers worldwide. The devices, which can deteriorate and then misfire when activated in a crash, have been blamed for at least 12 fatalities worldwide.
Mazda’s new campaign follows a recall in March 2015 of 2002-2003 model Mazda6 sedans in South Africa. That initiative was to replace Takata inflators used in passenger side airbag systems.
