The White House has nominated Anthony Foxx, mayor of Charlotte, N.C., to succeed Ray LaHood as secretary of the Dept. of Transportation.
LaHood announced in January he would leave the post, which he has held since 2009, when a successor was confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
LaHood's crusade against distracted driving has been a signature element of his tenure. President Barack Obama says a key task for the next DOT chief will be rebuilding America's transportation infrastructure.
Obama praises Foxx's transportation initiatives in Charlotte, which include establishing electric tram service, extending a light-rail system and expanding the local airport. Foxx is a lawyer who served on the Charlotte city council for four years before being elected mayor in 2009.
