Ferrari NV is moving forward with plans for the supercar brand’s first crossover/SUV and will decide on sales targets over the next two years.
The carmaker is “beyond just considering” an SUV, Sergio Marchionne, who heads Ferrari and former owner Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, tells reporters. He says production volume will be limited to preserve the brand’s exclusivity.
Until recently, Marchionne and other executives had vowed Ferrari would never build an SUV. That view softened this summer when company officials said such a model would “probably happen” as part of a plan to expand Ferrari’s current four-car lineup and double profits by 2022.
Ferrari’s new five-year plan is expected to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2018. Rival Lamborghini SpA is due to launch its first crossover/SUV, the Urus, next year.
