London England, says it will begin to levy a daily fee in April 2019—a year earlier than originally planned—on relatively high-polluting cars and vans for access to the central city.
Light-duty vehicles that don’t meet Euro 5 (gasoline) and Euro 6 (diesel) limits will be required to pay £12.50 (about $16) per day to enter the city’s so-called ultra-low emission zone.
London is accelerating the plan because the city’s air is “lethal,” says Mayor Sadiq Khan, who suffers from asthma. “I will not stand by and do nothing,” he declares. Khan hopes to extend the fee to include buses and large trucks in 2020 and expand the size of the clean-zone in 2021.
