London has begun taxing cars and vans that don’t meet Euro 4 emission standards £10 ($13.20) per day to operate in the city weekdays between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The so-called toxicity fee, dubbed the “T-charge,” targets diesel- and gasoline-powered vehicles built before 2006. The tax joins London’s 12-year-old congestion tax of £11.5 ($13.90) per day, which applies to most vehicles regardless of age that operate in the city center.
The new charge is in response to London’s record-high air pollution levels last January. A study in 2015 by researchers at King’s College London concluded the city’s air pollution causes more than 9,000 premature deaths per year.
