Production begins next spring for the 2015 Lincoln MKC, a premium small crossover entry from Ford Motor Co.'s luxury unit.

The new model closely mimics the MKC concept revealed in January at the Detroit auto show. The MKC gives Ford an entry in the luxury small crossover segment, which the company says has doubled since 2009. Competitors include the Audi S3, BMW X1,Mercedes-Benz GLA and Range Rover Evoque.

Ford will use the MKC as a showcase for its new 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine, which makes 275 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. The optional powerplant will join the MKC's base 2.0-liter engine, which is rated at 240 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive will be optional for the front-drive car. Active grille shutters help improve fuel efficiency at highway speeds.

The MKC is the second of four new vehicles for the Lincoln brand due by 2016, including the 2013 MKZ midsize luxury sedan introduced last year.
