General Motors Co.'s stamping plant in Lordstown, Ohio is switching to an LED lighting system expected to use only 16% as much power as the old lights.

The project replaced more than 1,600 fixtures rated at 400 or 1,000 watts with fewer than 1,300 LED fixtures rated at 90-360 watts in the plant's high-bay area.

GM says the LED lights will provide the same brightness and should function maintenance-free for more than 150,000 hours.

The system is controlled with a build-in wireless system that can adjust lighting to match production schedules. It dims fixtures between shifts and during work breaks. The facility now uses some of the LEDs instead of fluorescent lamps to provide light during non-production hours.
