Lamborghini SpA plans to start pre-production builds of its all-new Urus SUV/crossover in April, CEO Stefano Domenicali tells Digital Trends.
Domenicali describes 2017 as a “delicate period” for the supercar maker as it expands its plant in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, to make room for the Urus. Lamborghini expects the Urus will enable it to double sales to 7,000 units per year.
The production version of the crossover is scheduled to be unveiled at the Geneva auto show in March. Deliveries to customers aren’t expected to start until late this year or early 2018.
The Lambo SUV will be built on a modified version of parent Volkswagen AG’s MLB platform that also carries the Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga. Engine choices are expected to include a turbocharged V-8 and a hybrid-electric system, both of which would be firsts for Lamborghini.
