Kia Motors Corp. is preparing a U.S. callback for 342,400 of its 2014-2015 model Soul multipurpose vehicles, including electric models, with steering gear assemblies that could fail.
The problem is a plug that could allow the system’s pinion gear to separate. If that happens, the driver can no longer steer the vehicle. Kia says a partial failure may cause a clunking noise from the steering rack while turning the steering wheel.
The new recall includes vehicles covered by two previous campaigns in 2014 and 2015 for the same defect. Those cars will be checked to determine if the repair was performed correctly. Kia plans to begin the new recall on Nov. 16.
