Johnson Controls Inc. has developed an algorithm and power seating system that properly adjusts itself automatically before the driver enters the vehicle.

Researchers says that correct seat track and height adjustments cannot be determined exclusively by leg and torso length, respectively. Each has an impact on the other.

JCI developers came up with an algorithm based on a driver's height they say can accurately pre-adjust the seat to a precise default position. In tests to date, users report the result is very good or requires only minor manual repositioning.

Drivers activate the system by using a smartphone app developed by JCI to input their height before approaching the car. The company notes that such a system would be especially handy for rental cars, car-sharing services or families where multiple members take turns driving the same vehicle.

Another pre-adjustment option would be to use an onboard camera to determine body size before the driver enters the vehicle. JCI says drivers also could tap their height into the vehicle's digital control console after entering.
