Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda has been named to chair the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Assn. for a second two-year term.

Toyoda had been scheduled to turn over the job to an executive from Honda next May. But JAMA’s board decided earlier today to keep him on through next year’s Olympics in Tokyo, suggesting it would be better for Japan’s auto industry.

Japan’s carmakers are struggling with cooling sales overseas and trade uncertainties with the U.S.

Normally, JAMA’s ceremonial chairmanship rotates every two years among representatives of Honda, Nissan and Toyota.
