Iran Khodro Co. has signed a memorandum of understanding with nine suppliers to develop a modular platform that will underpin several new IKCO-branded models.
The program will be headed by Italian design house Pininfarina SpA. Other contributors will include companies that specialize in engines, transmissions, chassis systems and manufacturing as well as university researchers.
At least four models are expected to ride on the platform, including a hatchback, midsize sedan and SUV. The first models are expected to launch by the end of the decade. The architecture will support traditional powertrains and electrified systems.
Sales initially will be limited to Iran. Shipments to other unspecified markets are planned to follow later, with Iran Khodro targeting exports reaching 30% of its total sales by 2025.
The new platform is necessary for Iran Khodro’s long-term viability as it enters new markets, according to company officials. In the past, the company has used platforms from other carmakers, including long-time partner PSA Group.
The €70 million ($76 million) agreement with Pininfarina covers the concept architecture, body design and product development through virtual and physical validation. India’s Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. acquired Pininfarina in late 2015.
